Nevada back at it again!

"...many of those drivers are already going 85, the bump would just allow them to do so legally."

Remember, this is for RURAL Interstates, the statistically SAFEST roads! Who's been to Nevada and can vouch for an increase to 85 mph? It's a HUGE state! Fatigue is a huge factor in accidents on rural highways. 85 mph will help drivers stay focused. For proof, look up the traffic fatalities of the Australian Northern Territory. The fatalities were much less during times when it had no speed limit.

Not too far back, a Montana lawmaker also proposed an increase to 80 or even 85 mph. Michigan was also itching for a bump to 75 or 80 mph. Finally, just a few days ago, a Missouri lawmaker proposed 75 mph. Let's see what this year brings!

If you want to keep up to date on such speed limit increases (shameless plug):

What is a "Rural interstate"? Is it a fancy way of saying interstates that don't go through major cities?

85? Good Lord, it's NEVADA! They could set it at 100MPH and not see much of a difference.

Other than the fine income...

I don't really get why states have blanket 'max speed' limits. Get rid of that nonsense all together and let the engineers set it for whatever is appropriate for the road.

While I'm for higher speed limits (where the roadway/conditions are appropriate), I have a hard time believing that the U.S. is ready for an "American Autobahn." The general public is woefully ill-prepared for triple-digit speeds being legal. Consider the stereotypical "I have money" businessperson in whatever high-powered luxury car (an AMG Mercedes, an M5, Porsche, etc.) who likes to break the rules. Let's assume that some of them do 85 in a 65 zone now; if 85 becomes legal, I don't think it's unreasonable to imagine that a number of people will speed over that new 85 mph limit, regardless if the traffic and weather and such dictates that such high speeds are safe. People (myself included, at times) push the envelope. I try to only do so when traffic is not present and the road conditions and visibility aren't hindering a higher rate of speed. Does everyone have that mindset when they speed? I doubt it. Am I perfect? Also, no. But I take driving very seriously—I try to learn and better my skills and knowledge, and I'm willing to accept whatever consequences arise if I get stopped.
The other thing to consider is individuals trying to enforce what they see as more reasonable driving habits on others—have you ever seen someone pull out to block a pass on two-lane opposing traffic (I'm assuming the blocker sees the pass/speed as unsafe, and wants to stop this behavior by the person behind them)? Or someone blocking the far left lane, causing more aggressive drivers to pass on the right or weave through traffic? These possibilities concern me, and I don't think that rules of driving (regardless of speed) are enforced well enough to make an unlimited autobahn something we're ready for. I don't know much about driving in Germany, but I'm under the impression that they enforce all of their driving laws in a very strict manner, and the driving population is ingrained to follow them. Hell, I'm pretty sure that you can get tickets in the winter for simply not having full-on snow tires. If that's the case, they seem much more prepared for whatever conditions arise than the average driver here. [/endrant]

I just think different rules need to be enforced. That person "blocking a pass" should be fined or jailed for endangering other drivers, those not keeping up with some kind of minimum speed limit, pulled over and fined and so on. Most highway patrol only enforce speeding laws and not much else.

Also I agree most US drivers are just plain too stupid to be on the road.

Being an American who has driven in Germany, on the Autobahn (in a B180 CDI rental), there is one thing that Germans do that Americans will never get.

They yield the left lane. If you get behind someone, you know they will get out of the way. They also know where you are, so they do not blindly pull into the passing lane (usually) if you are closing at 200+ km/h (A Dutchman in a Volvo estate does that).

Until the drivers of the US get rid of this mentality of "It's my GOD GIVEN RIGHT to be in the left hand lane", an American Autobahn (or talk thereof) is pointless.

Hah, yeah. My cousin was working in Vegas for a while, and commuting from a short distance outside the city. He claims he got pulled over a couple times while exceeding the speed limit by a "significant margin" (his words), and was only asked to drive faster because he was impeding traffic.
